Two senior undergraduate students of the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology were this year’s recipients of the 16th Ed Padlan Awards for Academic Excellence in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. They are Mr. Arman A. Ghodsinia and Mr. Jan Patrick C. Tan. The Ed Padlan Award is given to the two senior undergraduates of MBB who have received the highest grade weighted average as of the start of their senior year. Mr. Ghodsinia has a GWA of 1.1613 and Mr. Tan 1.1989.

Each received a medal, a certificate, and a cash award. The medals were placed on the awardees by their family, both parents for Mr. Ghodsinia, and the mother and grandfather of Mr. Tan. Most of the senior undergraduate students were present at the event.

The award honors the achievements of Dr. Ed Padlan, a Filipino scientist known internationally for pioneering work in antibody engineering. In her speech at this event, UP Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Gisela P. Concepcion stressed that Dr. Padlan’s achievements were the result of passion, discipline and hard work. She encouraged the awardees and other students to work hard and at the same time remain humble. A man known for his humility, Dr. Padlan always reminded students that the more they knew the more the should realize how little they know. Dr. Concepcion also encouraged students to “give back” to the country as befits their position as “iskolar ng bayan”, specifically inviting everyone to look to our national hero Jose Rizal who also gave back to his country.

In their short speeches the awardees Mr. Ghodsinia and Mr. Tan expressed how at the start of their careers in MBB they had not imagined they could perform they way they actually did. They both thanked family and friends for their achievement. In his closing speech the Dean of the College of Science of UP Diliman Dr. Jose Maria P. Balmaceda noted how the achievements of the students are nearly impossible without the support of many people–family, mentors, classmates. Large amounts are, in fact, spent by the NIMBB to train its students, justified by the fact that MBB students are among the most academically prepared students in the country.

The next awards will be conferred in September 2017.
